Plymouth Hope FC returned to winning ways with a thrilling 3-2 home win over University of Plymouth UPFC2 in their latest Plymouth & West Devon Saturday League encounter. The victory marked a crucial bounce-back after a frustrating draw in their previous fixture.
Tactical Brilliance Behind the Win
The match, once again officiated by referee David Avery, saw Plymouth Hope FC come out with intensity and purpose. Determined to avoid a repeat of past setbacks, the team dominated early possession and looked sharp in attack.
In a bold tactical shift, head coach Abraham deployed attacking midfielder Didi in goal, while defensive anchor Yusuf Olabisi Akinsanya strengthened the backline. Striker Olasoji Adeoye, still recovering from a fitness issue, started on the bench but was later introduced in a false nine role. Kelvin Fyneboy took charge of the number 10 position, adding creativity to the forward line.
The strategic decisions paid dividends in the first half, with Plymouth Hope FC controlling the tempo and stifling UPFC2’s rhythm. Forward Lukman emerged as the star of the half, netting a brace to give the hosts a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Second-Half Impact and Late Drama
UPFC2 came out stronger in the second half, increasing pressure in search of an equalizer. In response, Abraham made decisive changes in the 60th minute, introducing Soji and Innocent both recently recovering from injuries.
The move proved effective, as Soji set up Innocent for Plymouth Hope FC’s third goal, extending the lead to 3-1. UPFC2, however, were handed a lifeline in the 79th minute when a penalty was awarded and converted, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
In a tense final stretch, Plymouth Hope FC showcased defensive resilience, weathering UPFC2’s relentless attacks to secure all three points.
Reactions and Next Steps
Speaking after the match, head coach Abraham expressed satisfaction with the outcome:
“3-2 is a win, and all we need to do is keep winning our games to progress in the league,” he said.
Soji, reflecting on his comeback, added:
“I’ve had a groin injury since November, but I’m gradually recovering and getting reintegrated into the team.”
League Standing and Upcoming Fixture
Following the win, Plymouth Hope FC now occupies third place on the league table with 40 points. Their next fixture is scheduled for April 5, 2025, against Lugger 1st FC at Victoria Park. With momentum on their side, the team will look to continue their push toward promotion in the coming weeks.
